About Syndication and Feeds

Many websites have links labeled "XML" or "RSS" or "Atom". All of these are ways of saying that you can find out about updates to that site without having to browse to it yourself to check, and referred to as Syndication, Aggregation, or  Subscribing. On most sites, in lieu of a link, will be an orange (and occasionally a gray) button that says RSS or XML such as: which indicates that the page or site has a feed available.

Feeds contain headlines, summaries, and hyperlinks to complete articles on Richwoodstrack.com and other websites. Users utilize software known as news readers to group headlines from multiple sources into one interface. These feeds allow you to easily add headlines from RichwoodsTrack.com or other sources to your web site. You can also view our feeds in news readers.

What Is Needed?

In order to subscribe to a feed you will need a "player" called a feed reader, also known as a news reader or RSS reader or RSS client. There are number of such tools available with many of them  totally free. Many browsers have web-based "players" built in such as MyYahoo!.

The "player" permits subscription to any feeds chosen, checks automatically to see when the feeds are updated, and then displays the updates as they arrive.

Feed readers come in two varieties: web-based, or as an installable program. If you use one of the web-based readers, you can access your feeds from anywhere you go, just by signing into the website that manages your feeds. If you use a feed reading program that installs on your computer, your feeds can be stored for you even if you're not connected to the Internet.

What Feed Reader Should Be Used?

A wide variety of other news aggregators can be found by searching for "news aggregator" on your favorite search engine.

On most browsers, you can right-click our link and select "copy shortcut" or "copy target address" and paste it in the reader which you have selected in order to add our headlines to your news aggregator. Some news aggregators will automatically discover our Atom feeds as you browse RichwoodsTrack.com. Please consult your news aggregator's documentation for more information.

Subscribing to Feeds

Once a news aggregator has been selected you can search for some new feeds that you feel are worth reading. Many of the tools listed above provide some built-in feeds to get you started. Then, as you visit other sites on the web, you can keep your eyes open for or for links that say XML or RSS or Syndication or Atom and add the feeds you find interesting.
