Since her 2003 graduation from the University of Arkansas, Wurth has steadily carved down her 1500-meter times to repeatedly hit the international class of sub-4:10 range.

In 2005 she placed third in the 1500 meters at the USA Indoor Championships. She competed in the USA Cross Country Championships Women’s 4K, placing 12th with fellow Americans Amy Mortimer (sixth) and Jenelle Deatherage (17th). In June 2005, Wurth won the 1500 meters at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic and took home sixth-place honors at the USA Track & Field Championships in California.

In 2006, she received an invitation and competed at the prestigious Millrose Games. She finished 3rd in the 2006 USATF Indoor Championship with a qualifying time for the World Indoor Championships. Her 4:12.82 finished netted a 5th place finish in the 1500m at the 2006 US Outdoor National Championships in Indianapolis.

Also, in the 2006 Reebok Grand Prix meet in New York City, Wurth was involved in the setting of the 5,000m World Record. Joined by Iryna Vashchuk, Wurth helped pace Meseret Defar to a new 5,000 meter world record of 14:24.53, shaving .15 off of Elvan Abeylegesse's 2004 mark. Vashchuk led through the kilometer in 2:52 before dropping out. Wurth then led Defar through 2k in 5:47 and 3000m in 8:42.8. After that, Defar was on her own. Though she was behind record pace for most of the race, a 61.5-second final lap brought the record back within reach for the 23 year old from Ethiopia.

In 2007, Wurth returned to the Millrose Games in the 800 meters for the Games 100th consecutive running. Running in third place with about 75 meters remaining, Wurth-Thomas accelerated to close her 5 meter deficit surging to the lead and the win in 2:06.97. In late February she returned to the  Reggie Lewis Center in Boston (where in January she had finished 3rd in the Reebok Indoor Games mile at 4:31.84) to compete in a double at the USATF Indoor Nationals, finishing 3rd in the mile with 4:36.78 and following up the next day claiming 2nd in the 800m with a time of 2:03.70.

Wurth placed 2nd at the 2007 USATF Outdoor National Championships in the 1500 with an "A Qualifying Time" of 4:07.86 to qualify as one of the U.S. representatives in the event at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan.
