Fellow senior Vicky Guszka doubled up in the sand jumps to give ND five champions as the Irish finished with 119 points — 25 more than second-place Danville. Bloomington came in third (79). Richwoods finished ninth (21), Manual 10th (11) and Peoria High 11th (6) in the 11-team meet.
Gilbert, the two-time defending 3200 meter state champion, began her high volume night with a victory in her signature event. The University of Notre Dame recruit covered the 3200 in 11 minutes, 24.76 seconds to better Urbana sophomore Libby Cultra by 13.25 seconds. Teammate Grace Breitbach finished third (11:47.34).
Gilbert, who swept the 1600 and 3200 as ND finished third a year ago, ran a 2:21.20 to take the 800 and capped her night with an area best 5:05.37 in the 1600. Gruszka, the 2015 state triple jump champion, won the triple with a 37-6 leap and recorded a season-best 17-8 to take the long jump.
“(We) had our full roster set up and ready
to go and they went after it,” Notre Dame
coach John Cummings said. “I told them all
year that they needed to embrace the
challenge and it wasn’t about (personal
records) but places and they went out and
still set PR’s.”
Manual junior DeAmbrea Brown upped her area best shot put by five inches with a toss of 42-71/2 to knock off reigning champ Ellie Weltha of Bloomington by 10 inches.
Notre Dame senior CeCe Ricca placed second in the 400 with an area-best :58.44 and was scratched from the 200, after ND had already wrapped up the team title. Teammate Audrey Datzman added second in the 300 hurdles.
Richwoods sophomore Tiara Smith finished second in the 100 hurdles (area-best :15.29) and second in the high jump (5-0).
