Knights Flex Muscle at Champaign RHS Finishes 2nd The weather finally broke giving the Knights an opportunity to see where they really might be competitively as the ventured to the always difficult Champaign Central Invitational (previously the North Central Invitational). They liked what they saw. Overall Richwoods was very competitive in the meet amassing 113 points finishing 2nd behind Prospect and ahead of long time nemesis Springfield Southeast as well as always tough Chokia and Champaign Centennial. The Knights total took a 10 point jolt when its winning 4x200m relay team saw a 1:46 effort wasted as they were disqualified for a handoff outside the exchange zone. On a happier note, Junior Donielle Ross broke her own school record with 3 of her efforts in winning the Triple Jump, her long of the day registering 37' 8". It appears that the jump will place her atop the current Illinois Prep Top Times Leaderboard in the event. In what may have been the best personal effort in the meet, Richwoods sophomore throws specialist Megan Kerns broke her personal best in the discus by an astounding 19' + when she threw 124' 7" and became the Knights Number 2 all time in the event. Richwoods also claimed a surprise win in the open 400m despite resting team event leader Ross when Alex Starks ran an FAT :62.30 (converting to :62.1). Starks also finished in second place in the High jump to defending state champion Raisa Taylor. The two were tied with no misses through 5' 4" when Starks failed to negotiate the 5' 6" height while Taylor cleared. Richwoods distance competitors lovingly referenced as "the dawgs" scored 41 of the Knights point total. They scored in each of their opportunities with Katie Grinstead second in the 1600 and in 3200; Theresa Smart third in the 1600 and 5th in the 3200; Sravanthi Vegunta fourth in the 800 as well as legs in the 4x800 and 4x400; Emily Coltrin seventh in the 800 as well as the 4x800; Vegunta and Coltrin were joined by Yasmine Goelzer and Adrien Clay in the 4x800 for a second; and the Frosh-Soph 4x800 of Liza Backer, Rebecca Hanna, Ann Tracy and Kate Skarvin claimed a third place finish. Season best relay performances occurred in the 4x400 when Starks, Vegunta Jenisha Brittine and Ross clocked a 4:09.2, while the usual 4x100 Knight quartet of DaShay Johnson, Danielle DesJardins, Brittine and Shavantay Thomas went :51.1 in the event. There were a number of performances affecting the Richwoods All Time Performance Lists. Ross' school record in the Triple Jump extended her lead in the event. Kerns moved to No. 2 in the Discus. The 4x400 of Starks, Vegunta, Brittine and Ross became RHS No. 9 while the 4x100 of D. Johnson, DesJardins, Brittine and Thomas move up to No. 21 in that list. 10th places were achieved by Starks with her :62.1 in the 400 and by Shavantay Thomas in the 100 with a :12.4 clocking. Chenille Johnson's 92' 4" throw in the Discus moves her onto the list at No. 19. |
