Knights Team Portrait
Emerging
As the new season draws near the Richwoods Women's Track
& Field team seems to have stabilized with 31 members. The veteran team
includes 19 returning letter winners. As is inevitable in early spring,
unpredictable weather has hampered the extent of practice. However a portrait of
the team is beginning to emerge.
The Knights' sprint contingent is headed by senior All-Stater
and Richwoods record holder Alisha Smith. According to Prep
Top Times, recognized as Illinois' premier high school running publication,
Smith's :11.8 and :25.2 clockings of last year represent the 4th and 10th best
returning times in the state. Smith is again joined by seniors Ashley Gordon and
Laura Unes, who formed 3/4 of the school record setting 4x100 relay team. The
coaching staff is seeking to find the heir to graduated Barbara Hale's position
in the relays. This group of challengers is currently led by Freshman Biannca
Ward, always dependable Shauna Wills, Deja Davis, and Freshman Jessica Smith.
Additional strength in the short sprints will be provided by Courtney Johnson,
Martica Young and
Ariana Johnson. The 400 currently is ruled by veterans Deja
Davis and LaPorschua Lindsey. The hurdlers of Coach Thole
have been greatly limited in training due to the repeatedly
strong
spring winds. They are again led by All-Conference Brittney Wallace and her
junior cohort Nathalie Razo. They are joined by soph Michelle Zagardo and frosh
Amanda Schroeder and Alyssa Glawe to form what has the makings of a competitive
group. The throws look to remain competitive despite the
graduation of double school record
holder Delaina Martin with their retention of veteran senior Captain Jamie
Powers and Desiree Parkman. Both are experienced and well placed on the all-time
Richwoods throws lists. They are joined by newcomer Jewel Sanders who is making
rapid progress in advancing her technical skills to the level of her natural
talent in the throws. The veteran "D-Dogs"
distance runners are led by seniors Moriah Johnson and Ashley Moeller and
include Alesha Guard, Dianna He, and Robin Pestien. Newcomers Laura Craig and Kristin
Locke appear very ready to break into scoring mix for the
Knights in the distances. Freshman Jolene Wells is currently sidelined with knee
problems but will hopefully be healthy in the near future.
The jumps look to provide an interesting opportunity for the Knights with a mix
of veteran and
newcomer. The goal in the triple jump is that 4 Knights challenge the 30 foot
barrier - Laura Unes, Nathalie Razo, Amanda Baietto and Stephanie Lovingood. The
high jump is on its way to being the strongest group for some time at RHS with
Baietto, Razo and Lovingood leading the way. The long jump group includes
all of the mentioned triplers with the addition of Deja Davis, Jessica
Smith, Amanda Schroeder and Martica Young. The
Knights return the entire pole vault contingent of school record holder Shaunna
Wills, Carrie Knapp and Dianna He. The vaulters look forward to a break in the
weather to allow real practice to begin for the event. In
all it appears that the 2004 season may hold very good things for the Knights. |
