Richwoods made its annual trip to the Galesburg Invitational with some concerns
because of the strength shown by Galesburg in its previous outings this season.
The concerns proved to be well founded. The Knights however maintained their
composure and fought the Silver Streaks throughout the meet which was not
decided until the final events. The Streaks maintained a mere 1 point lead over
Richwoods very late in the meet.
The Knights produced several season or career bests in the meet in stepping up
to the competition. Career
bests included Nathalie Razo in both hurdle events (:17.0 and :53.3),
Brittney
Wallace who matched her
:49.3 best in the 300 hurdles, Laura Unes who with a 31' 11½" effort
exceeded her previous best in the triple jump by nearly 2 feet, Moriah Johnson
in the 3200 (13:05.7) and Alesha Guard in the 1600 (6:25.0). Yet another mix
surfaced in the 4x100 relay - Unes, Jessica
Smith, Ashley Gordon, and
Alisha Smith. They promptly responded with a :50.3 clocking which is good for
7th place on the all-time Knights list.
Stephanie Lovingood continued her
quality efforts. She won her opening event, the high jump, in 4' 10" and
then after conferring with coaches had the bar raised 7" to a meet record
5' 5" but was unsuccessful in her attempts with two being very near misses.

She immediately followed up the high jump by winning the long. The 4x400
provided an interesting and exciting finale to her day. When she took the baton
the Knights were approximately 25 meters from the lead. Lovingood had made up
the deficit and claimed the lead by the 100 mark on the way to an out time at
the 200 mark of approximately 27 seconds and...then she came to personally
understand the concept of the penalty imposed on one who goes out too fast...her
in was :37. The overall effort was remarkable nonetheless.
