Knights Newcomers Introduced to Competition in BlueFinger

Knights newcomers were introduced to the blustery conditions of spring time track at the annual Blue Finger Intra-Squad Meet and acquitted themselves admirably. Despite the windy conditions the Knights produced a number of results indicative of a productive season.

The coaching staff was anxious to utilize the intrasquad meet to try to locate a replacement for Barbara Hale in the Knights always strong 4x100 relay. The issue seems to be reasonably well resolved with the inclusion of Freshman Biannca Ward into the mix. The relay of Laura Unes, Ward, Ashley Gordon and Alisha Smith looked in near midseason form by nailing its 3 handoffs and finishing in a :52.1 clocking. Ward also finished 3rd in the 100 at :13.2 behind the always dependable Alisha Smith and Ashley Gordon clockings of :12.9 and :13.0 respectively. Freshmen Jessica Smith (:13.7 and :29.5) and Martica Young (:29.9) also produced respectable times in the sprints.

Sophomore newcomer Jewel Sanders showed that her learning curve in the throws will be rather short when she threw team leading efforts of 33' 6" and 94' 4" in the shot and discus.

Alisha Smith made an her first appearance in the long jump since early in her sophomore year and shook the rust off with a team leading effort of 14' 8". In the triple, a trio of Knights, Nathalie Razo, Amanda Baietto and Laura Unes broke past the 28' mark. The high jump was claimed by Stephanie Lovingood with 4' 8', followed by Nathalie Razo at 4' 6" and Amanda Baietto at 4' 4".

Brittney Wallace appeared strong and fit in the hurdles with times of :17.5 and :50.6.

The distances produced one of the strangest races when the coaches decided to use Robin Pestien as the leadoff for both of the 4 x 800 relay teams. Laura Craig and Moriah Johnson had the top splits of 2:49.0 and 2:51.7. The milers battled a difficult wind in the backstretch but still produced respectable times with Johnson winning in 6:28.7 followed by Alesha Guard (6:34.4) and Robin Pestien (6:35.7) who waged a lively battle for second.

Now, as they say in New Orleans, "Laissez les bontemps roulez!!" or "Let the good times roll!!"
